Engine
I gave up messing with Kent engines (more specifically, carbs
and points) and fitted a 2 litre injected pinto from a Granada
Ghia. This was more straight-forward than people think.
Please
see here for how the engine conversion was done and
all the problems that I encountered.
After running the injected Pinto for a few months I was very
impressed by it. The fuel economy was amazing compared with
a crossflow running 45's! It also had amazing driveability
and pulled strongly from 1500rpm in fourth gear. You could
provoke lurid tail slides around any corner without any real
effort. It really was steerable by the throttle.
The extra weight of the Pinto lowered the front of the car
by another inch! Rather than just change the front springs
I bought a 2¼"
coil conversion kit with a pair of 225lb 10½"
springs. This provided adjustable ride height at the front.
See here for details.
I also took the opportunity to buy some poly bushes for the
track control arms.
Once again, further driving revealed the need for a 5-speed
gearbox as the car lacked any real top end speed. While the
gearbox was out I removed the clutch and flywheel and had
the flywheel lightened. See here
for details about the gearbox change.
I had decided to take the car to a track day to see how it
performed. This meant that I had a deadline for carrying out
the gearbox conversion and improving the front brakes. The
brake discs were replaced with 2.8i Capri discs. I also had
to buy a Princess caliper spacing kit.
