Here are a
few pictures of my friend Phil’s Escort. I used to own
this car myself when it was a very rusty 1100.
of the bodywork restoration.
The car is now fitted with the ‘ex Dom’s’ crossflow (spec), which has
been rebored, new bearings, valve guides, unleaded conversion etc, etc.
After running in the car produced 130hp at 5800 R.P.M at the flywheel
at Sanspeeds rolling road, with good low down and mid range power and
torque. Unfortunately the Holbay Hunter DCOE carbs gave the engine an
incurable flat spot low down and have recently been changed to DCOE31’s
(ex Lotus twin cam). Phil is still playing with the jetting in the hope
of getting a bit more from the engine (the 130 h.p. was produced with
32mm chokes, Phil has now gone to 34mm). If anyone has any info on what
jetting they run on a crossflow of this type, please e mail Phil at: Phil@philandsam.f9.co.uk.
(Jetting at the moment is 45F8 idle, 130 main, F16 emulsion tubes, 40
pump jets, 180 air correctors)
Also fitted is a Sierra 5 speed box, 2 inch Leda decambered rear springs
with Bilsteins at the rear. 3 ltr Capri struts with uprated and lower
srings and dampers at the front. Polybushes are fitted all round with
an anti dive kit at the front. Brakes are taken care of with mk1 3 litre
Capri master cylinder (no servo), braided hoses, princess 4 pots and
9 inch drums at the rear.
Interior has early Mexico dash, cavalier SRI Recaros and Early AVO steering
wheel from Rally design.
During the summer of 2002 the engine bay was resprayed with new slam
panel, gusset boxes fitted, new breather tank and a recored twin cam
radiator (see pics below).
Future plans for the car include fitting radius arms and maybe a Panhard
rod and trying to make a quieter quickshift lever, as the existing rally
design all metal one gives an excellent shift, but is very noisy above
3000 rpm.
The existing Ashley exhaust has had its rear box replaced with one from
a Montego diesel turbo centre section (this is identical apart from approx
2 inches longer and still has some baffles in it!). Whilst this is quieter,
it wont last for ever so suggestions on any alternatives (Peter Lloyd
make a system how well does it fit and sound ?) has anyone got a stainless
system made ?
